All Ecoflo systems are odour and chemical free as well as being completely waterless. Ecoflo composting toilets provide a hygienic method of recycling human waste. By separately managing your toilet (aka black water) and other wastewater (i.e. greywater), you avoid the need to waste and pollute potable water. Here’s how our solution to onsite wastewater management works.
Solid waste is collected in a small discrete compost chamber directly beneath the toilet pedestal. A low powered 12 volt or alternatively 240 volt electric fan continually circulates air through the chamber speeding the composting process and eliminating odours. Liquids are separated from solids and evaporated by the fan. Any excess liquid is dispersed into a small bath tub sized trench (2m L x 40cm W x 40cm D).
For those people unable to fully commit themselves to a non flush toilet above a composter, there is the Sun-Mar Centrex model which uses a microflush pedestal to remove the waste to a remote composter. This toilet in a four person home uses 2L of water per day.
Below is a brief introduction to the three types of manufactured composting toilets. All systems can be purchased in a package with a greywater treatment system to provide a full on-site wastewater management solution.
Batch composting toilets
These systems come with at least two composting chambers. Fill one, put it aside to continue composting, and put the second chamber into use. When it's time to change chambers again, the contents of the first chamber should be well and truly composted. You then remove the compost, put it on your garden or bury it, and re-use the chamber.
Our Nature Loo brand of modular batch systems, such as the Classic 750, allow for virtually unlimited capacity. If usage increases, an additional chamber can be purchased to accommodate faster rotation and still provide adequate composting time.
Continuous composting toilets
The Clivus Multrum system is based on a “continuous” composting process in one large chamber. A large inspection door is unique to the Clivus and allows the user to easily check that the system is functioning efficiently. Another design feature of the Clivus composting chamber is that access to the old and new compost are kept separate. The older, fully composted material settles to the bottom of the chamber where it is easily removed via the front access hatch.
Hybrid composting toilets
The Sun-Mar models complete the composting process by utilising a combination of the batch composting and continuous composting process. Compost is continually added to the patented 'Bio-drum' but on being half full a portion is fed into a 'finishing tray' at the base of the unit by rotating a handle. The compost sits in isolation in this finishing tray until it is removed as humus and disposed of in the garden as per the batch process models. The Sun-Mar process is therefore ideal for those people who like the idea of a continuous system but want a guarantee that the humus is not contaminated with fresh waste.

About Sun-Mar Toilets
The way a Sun-Mar works is not only unique, it is also elegantly simple. Common sense tells us that the best way to compost is to use a rotating drum. In 1971 Hardy Sundberg of Sun-Mar developed the world’s first self-contained composting toilet. For the first time a self-contained toilet could be put in a bathroom and would evaporate liquids...
